Economic development and job growth are a major focus of Rebuilding Calumet. With its exceptional location, high quality transportation, and skilled workforce, the Calumet community is poised for growth. Developers, investors and employers recognize that East Chicago’s location – close to the Gary Chicago International Airport, along with local rail, road and port access – is ideal for companies that rely on shipping and transportation for their business. Location, combined with a large available workforce, is extremely attractive to businesses looking to expand or relocate operations.
Two significant warehouse distribution projects are currently in the planning stages. These two projects will feature new modern warehouse distribution facilities and together could generate up to 3,000 full-time jobs. These high-paying permanent jobs range from facility and shift managers, to small equipment operators and pick-n-pack support.
In addition, the Rebuilding Calumet partners are planning to build dozens of new homes and create opportunity for new retail, as well as, support services for commercial development. The vision for Calumet is to attract $300-$500 million in new investment.
